1. Milk and jaggery:

Milk — 1 cup

Jaggery — 1 ½ tablespoon

Cereal — ½ cup

Method:

Boil the milk and put it aside. Slowly add the cereal to it while stirring continuously. Ensure that the milk and cereal are well mixed and no lumps are formed. Now heat the mixture again till it gains a mid-runny consistency.

Add jaggery to the cereal and serve it hot.

Tip: While using water may be good for adults, for children, it is best to stick to milk. It adds to the nutritional value.

2. Vegetable puree:

Vegetable puree (any vegetable of choice) — 1 cup

Water — 500 ml

Cereal — I cup

Salt to taste

Method:

Boil vegetables of choice till they are soft, blend it well in the blender and sieve them. The puree is ready.

Now, in a heavy bottomed pan boil one cup of water. Once the water is boiled, take it off the heat and slowly add the cereal to it. Keep stirring to avoid lumps. Now add in the puree and salt to taste. The consistency should be semi-runny.

Tip: This is one of the best ways to get your child to eat all kinds of vegetables. So, be creative.

3. Fruits and nuts:

Fruits — 1 cup (pureed or chopped, whichever way your child prefers)

Milk — 1 ½ cup

Cereal — ½ cup

Sugar for sweetening

Method:

Either puree or slice the fruits. Boil the milk and put it aside, add the cereal to the milk and keep stirring it continuously to avoid forming lumps. Now, add the fruits and sugar for sweetening.

Serve it hot.

Tip: Avoid the sugar if the sweetening is right with just the fruits.

Apart from this, it crucial that as a parent, you keep your child interested in food. This will help in two ways — firstly, they will want to experiment with all the kinds of baby food. Secondly, it will make them less of a picky eater.
